MAIson jean-baptiste souillard
Jean-Baptiste Souillard began making wine under this own name in 2014. Jean-Baptiste grew up in the northern Rhône, where his father directed the local wine co-op. With a collection diplomas and degrees under his name, Jean-Baptiste garnered his experience by apprenticing and working with several well known winemakers such as Benjamin Leroux, Jean-Luc Colombo, Comte Armand, and Chateau Latour. He decided to embark making his own wines due to frustration of the lack of Northern Rhone wines that portray single vineyard terroir, as many of the wines were blends. He thought that the terroir of Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph were greatly under represented, and has since decided to champion the vineyard sites in the area.
The winery comprises a mere 2-hectares at present but Jean-Baptiste, focused on producing singular, terroir-driven wines makes 15 different cuvées from Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier. His vineyards are situated at the top of the slopes, ideally near the ridges and are rich in granite. This gives his wines structure, robust aromatics, and cool elevation minerality. To us, Jean-Baptiste is definitely one of the rising stars in the Northern Rhone appellation, making impeccable terroir driven wines.
