Scholium Project / Los Angeles River Wine Company

Scholium Project is a winery project by Abe Schoener that focuses on unconventional and experimental wines. Abe started out as a philosophy professor at St. John's College in Maryland, where he caught the winemaking bug. In 1998, he interned at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and never looked back. By 2000 he was making small batches of his own wine, and after being mentored by the one and only John Kongsgaard, he started Scholium full time in 2008. At the time, Abe could be considered a punk rocker, using eccentric methods and natural fermentations to make wines with little to no sulfur. This may not seem out of the ordinary now, but in the early 2000s it was a revolution. His work pushes the boundaries of perceived wine flavors, moving away from fruit flavors to tertiary and secondary flavors not often described in wine.

We are excited that Abe has now found a new home on the banks of the Los Angeles River and has begun a new project called the Los Angeles River Wine Company, where his focus will be on grapes from Southern California and in LA County from the Cucamonga Valley.
